Home and Other Reflections
Beginning in summer 2020, the complete body of Home and Other Reflections work will be exhibited on Arcadia University’s campus in the Harrison and Rosedale Galleries in the Commons, as well as a large-scale installation outside of the Commons. This body of work explores the visual narrative of life as a parent of special needs children. This work is derived directly from my own experiences as a parent as well as my time building community through the development of A Step Up Academy. Often, our lives with autism are isolated, kept inside, and misunderstood. This body of work brings my world in view.
Through the use of vestige objects from our life, a story is woven of the day-to-day joys and challenges that accompany life with autism. This work is intended to provide an inside peek, and open dialog between people and develop an understanding that leads to acceptance of differences.
This solo exhibition will be accompanied by a lecture series including panels of experts on inclusion in education and beyond, discourse between advocates and parents about who has societal/cultural permission to tell the stories of autism—as well as a lecture that I will deliver about the development of and concepts behind this body of work.
